KHADI ——

Reimagining a new India with Marangoni students

through the use of traditional textile

for modern fashion outcomes.

The Khadi fabric is a traditional historical fabric in India. It is a hand woven fabric promoted by Mahatma Gandhi as tool of freedom.

It is widely used in everyday occasions and is seen mainly for traditional purpose and uses. The aim of this NGO promoted project was being able to look at traditions with students and reimagining the fabric into a new context, highlighting the strength and redesigning the area of improvement.

The students looked at traditional Indian uniforms they would encounter on the streets and worked around the storytelling and context around them. The goal was to design new uniforms of freedom of thinking and perception, where they could embrace traditions as foundation for the present and future.
