Reincarnation Studio x IM ––– Creating connection between the student’s creativity and the needs of a fast changing market.

01. THE PROBLEM

For the last term of the 2nd year student’s at Istituto Marangoni the students are meant to work on their Personal style development as preparation for their final year:

I have noticed in my previous years of teaching, the lack of connection between the student’s creativity and the needs of a fast changing market and consumer’s needs.

02. THE SPECIFIC SOLUTION

In order to find a solution to the issue, I changed the approach to the brief slightly, with the aim of building a bridge between the 2:

  • In the initial stages of the term students are asked to develop a collection from an inspiration. As this leads students to develop collections looking at garment’s inspiration or applying a theme to garments I have asked students to rather start with a problem and to find a solution through the design of their collections.

The importance of thinking about the solution they’re offering to the market before the design process forces students to analyse the market and to respond with their output, creating in this way design products that are aligned with the current market.

  • I selected and invited the founders of Reincarnation Studio, a London based fashion tech start up that connect upcycling designers and textile artists with conscious fashion consumers, to share their knowledge and experience and inspire students.

A group of students, aligned with the values of the brand, had the chance to develop their capsule collection alongside the studio founder’s mentorship throughout the whole process.

Those students had access to the studio garment’s archive to select some pieces. Then, during the creation process those students received feedback on their creative and technical path from both the studio and the tutors.

03. THE OUTCOME

The collaboration was a very valuable experience for the students as they were familiarising with sustainable approaches while dealing with potential clients and external feedback.

The students kept their creativity an innovation while developing solutions that were matching the market’s need and direction.

The platform was also giving the opportunity to students to design garments to be potentially sold on the “Reincarnation.studio” platform, reinforcing even more the bridge between students and the market.
