Experimental Fashion Collage ––––– Understanding ideas generation through the process of the collage making.
01. THE PROBLEM
Social media and the abundance of visuals from the web creates sometimes a tendency to rely too much on beautiful images rather than useful ones for development of self.
In the early stages of design studies, students sometimes feels they don’t have the set of skills required in order to create complex and thoughtful outcomes and so, they may end up relying too much on existing re ferences with obvious issue of plagiarism.
02. THE SPECIFIC SOLUTION
Collage is a powerful technique that allows play and freedom of exploration while developing research and ideas. The workshop I created explore this technique by presenting its history, looking at past examples used by visual artists and then show how it can be used within fashion design.
Then students are then asked to engage with material collected before hand ( images, drawings, fabrics and paper, trims etc) exploring different approaches and choosing the one they feel closer to.
The strength of the technique is that it allows space for everyones and their natural inclination: the precise and immaculate student, the creative and bold one, the indecisive and the experimental can find easily the best way to create outcomes that are close to their inner nature and more important, create design outcomes that are aligned with their nature.
Each one of them was also encouraged in using the technique and material that was speaking more to their aesthetic but also to try new ones for the sake of experimentation.
03. THE OUTCOME
Those experimentations were then used in the following process of design development, highly enriching the final outcomes for their collections.
