2D ideas to 3D development ––––– Adding a fuller and more complex understanding of garment’s creations through tridimensional approaches.

01. THE PROBLEM

It is very important to develop a great understanding of tridimensionality when working with the idea of a clothed body. The usual development of the research body is on a “research book” where sketches, images of research, annotations and small manipulations are made.

This is an invaluable tool for a deep understanding and absorption of a concept but it needs to then be paired with proper experimentation of the same concept on the stand.

02. THE SPECIFIC SOLUTION

The workshop I created focused on the transition from flat/ 2 dimensions to 3 dimensions, and emphasise interdisciplinary practices between subjects ( research/ design development/ pattern cutting) so that the students could master the skills of ideas development more fully during the garments creation.

Students were asked to test ideas and concepts from their research book on the stand using paper, fabrics and any other material in order to develop the design exploration around the body/stand that has 3 dimensions which forces them to a fuller thinking and wider exploration.

Through the different test which were also time based ( from faster exercise too longer ones) students were asked to record their creations with pictures to be then added to their research book for further sketches.

03. THE OUTCOME

This section became vital part of the design development process adding a fuller and more complex understanding of garment’s creations.

The workshop created a deeper development of ideas that felt more realistic than the ones on paper only. Students had a deeper understanding of the garment’s potential they created and felt more confident when they needed to make decisions for their final garments.
