Family Mask ––– Rediscovering each other through a masked family portrait.

01. THE STARTING POINT

Christmas is a special moment for any family. The reunion I have with my family during this occasion feels extra special as we all live far away from each other and that’s a great opportunity to truly enjoy the “being together”. The desire underneath this personal project was to reveal through a family play new aspects of its members, rediscovering each other in our growth and life’s happenings.

02. THE SPECIFIC SOLUTION

I believe that images and artefacts hold more power in a word-full’s world: they leave space for feelings and self interpretations, leaving an intimate rhythm to digest the information as they hold more social presence.

After the experience of Vipassana, a deep and silent meditation that focus on observation, I have started going much deeper on the analysis of memories I have about people. I started to naturally deconstruct them into specific colours, shapes, patterns, objects, sounds and images that were revealing more of what’s usually shown, aka the social mask.

I started with the preparation of each family member’s personal folder, where images were selected after the analysis of each individuals based on Q/A, personal research and memories.

Then I asked them to build their own mask with a selection of cut outs of the latter for the photo.

03. THE OUTCOME

The final outcomes and the engagement upon the construction’s choice of their masks, revealed so many new aspect to me. The making-of experience in the family left me a profound sense of knowing them even more on a deeper level.

And I believe that is the power of masks itself: to reveal while they cover.
